Taiwan–China Tensions Are Rising Again

Tensions between Taiwan and China are drawing fresh international attention.

Taiwan has carried out an anti-blockade naval drill during its annual Han Kuang military exercises. The exercise brought Taiwan’s Navy and Coast Guard together to practice protecting a merchant ship and keeping sea routes open during a possible emergency.

A minesweeper also practiced clearing a safe route for the simulated vessel to reach port. Taiwan says the drill reflects growing concerns over China’s increasing maritime pressure around the island.

The situation has also attracted attention from Washington and other countries. China claims Taiwan as part of its territory, while Taiwan rejects Beijing’s sovereignty claims.

For now, the exercises are defensive preparations—not evidence that a war has started. But the rising military activity is keeping the Taiwan Strait under close international watch.
